Periyar National Park

If you want spot herds of elephants and tigers at close quarters, head to Periyar National Park this vacation. Snuggled in the Western Ghats mountain range at an altitude of 900 to 1,800 metres, the Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary shares its borders with three districts (Idukki, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta) of the south most Indian state of Kerala. It is a tiger reserve as well as an elephant reserve. Spread across 925 square kilometres, the park is a repository of endemic and endangered fauna and flora. Two major rivers of Kerala, the Pamba and Periyar flow through the park. Also called Periyar National Park, the wildlife sanctuary lies within the Cardamom Hills and is about 4 kilometres away from Kumily. The artificial lake created by the construction of the Mullaperiyar dam across the Periyar River makes the park more charming. This is the only wildlife park in the whole of India where you can watch wild animals at close quarters from a boat. The greatest attraction of the Periyar sanctuary is viewing herds of elephants playing in the lake. Things to do in Thekkady include plantation tours, elephant rides, boat rides on Periyar Lake, and trekking. Kurisumala, Pullumedu, Ottakathalamedu are the main trekking areas near Thekkady. Daily treks to Nellikkampetty and Manakkavala are also available. The best time to visit the park is from December to March and it is an integral part of our wildlife tour packages in Kerala.
