Explore the quaint beach town! Take a dip in the rolling waves at Papanasam! Located at a distance
of 45 km from Thiruvananthapuram, the Varkala Beach is noted for its laterite laced cliffs that rise
along the coastline. For those that love the sea sand and surf, Papanasam beach which is a 10-
minute drive from Varkala. It is an important pilgrimage centre for Hindus and the sea is believed to
wash away all the sins. The cliff tops offer an ideal point from where one can watch the sunset. The
secluded coves on the beach are a great attraction.
The Sivagiri Mutt and the Nature Cure Centre have streams of visitors. A tunnel that is over a
hundred years old is yet another landmark.
The JanardhanaSwamy Temple, whose presiding deity is Lord Vishnu, and believed to be over 2000
years old, is yet another must-seetop tourist destination of Kerala. The structure of the temple is
believed to have existed from the 12th century.

Ponnunthuruthu Island is an island getaway located about 20 km from Varkala. Located in the
Anjengo backwaters, it is accessible by boat that one can hire from Nedunganda Village Jetty. The
entire island is owned by the 100-year-old Siva Parvathy temple located there.
