Aranmula Snake Boat Race

Be a part of the Kerals’a oldest river boat fiesta: the Aranmula snake boat race. Chingam marks the beginning of the Malayalam New Year and the start of the Onam festival, the harvest festival. It is during this time (between August 15 and September 20 as per Malayalam Calendar) that the AranmulaUthrittathiVallamkali (boat race) is held as part of the festivities every year. The boats used for the race are referred to as Palliyodams or snake boats (long, sleek boats). The race is followed by a feast in the Parthasarathy temple. Anyone can participate in the feast. Make your Kerala holidays memorable. The venue of the race is the Pamba River (the third longest in the South Indian state of Kerala) in Aranmula, Pathanamthitta district. The world-famous Lord Ayyappa temple in Sabarimala (mala means hills) is located on the banks of this holy river. The railway station which is near to the boar race venue is Chengannur. Aranmula is about 10 kilometres away from the station. The nearest airport is the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, which is about 117 kilometres away. The rustic splendour of Aranmula will be a great experience for tourists participating in the Onam festivities in this place. And, the trip to Aranmula is never complete without a visit to the temple of the residing deity Parthasarathy, more than 200 years old AranmulaKottaram (Palace), Elephant training centre in Konni, Kakki Dam, Perunthenaruvi (waterfalls), and Gavi Eco Tourism Centre.
